The MRC experience
For over 100 years, the MRC has been transforming medical research, supporting work that has improved human health and changed lives by delivering economic, academic and societal impact. The benefits of MRC research have both a national and global impact; from advancing stem cell research to potentially combat brain and heart diseases, treating infections in Africa and making improvements in the design of tests for treatments.
Since the MRC was set up in 1913, 33 scientists in our units or supported by MRC grants have won Nobel Prizes. The MRC’s prize winners have been spread across the Nobel categories of Physiology or Medicine and Chemistry.

MRC culture and environment
The MRC is a great place to work and progress your career, be it in scientific research or the support functions.
The MRC is a special working environment where our researchers are rewarded by world class innovation and collaboration opportunities that the MRC name brings. We pride ourselves on giving you the opportunity to undertake formal and informal development activities to help you get the most from your role here and to support your career development. For researchers the opportunity to be able to work with the MRC is highly prized – not just for the chance to put the MRC on their CV, but also to work 100% on research, without the need to spend lots of time teaching students or preparing grant applications.
A vast range of career opportunities are available across the Medical Research Council. There are approximately 1200 MRC employees across the UK research establishments further supported by the UKRI central teams.
You can find out more about the types of roles here by reading/viewing our MRC People profiles: https://www.mrc.ac.uk/about/working-for-mrc/mrc-employee-stories/
Your local MRC workplace
Each MRC Unit, Institute or Head Office site is different and local Directors are responsible for setting the direction, culture and governance of each team – something that makes the MRC different to larger corporations.
You will find that you also have many local benefits, perhaps including subsidised drinks or catering, flexible working hours or gym discounts. Find out more about our different establishments on our Institutes, Units & Centres page.
