Top tips for completing your submission during the 2020 submission period
- You can enter and edit information in your Researchfish® profile at any time, you don’t need to leave it to the submission period. Get ahead and review your output information at a time in the year that suits you, then use the submission period to finalise your contribution.
- Refer to the guidance (“what should I report in this section”) to help decide where information should be entered (a brief overview of the output types (PDF, 157KB)). The section on development of new products/interventions and clinical trials has detailed guidance which can easily be missed.
- Do update outputs and outcomes that have progressed, or otherwise changed status. For example, collaborations can be marked as no longer active, patents filed can move to granted (or no longer maintained) and products/intervention development may have reached a new stage.
- Do attribute outputs closely linked to the project, don’t attribute all outputs to all projects. In the case of publications we’ve noted some cases of papers that have little connection to the project nevertheless being attributed to it. Consider whether there is a justifiable link between funding and published results.
- Do report a range of outputs if these outputs have been realised. Although not all projects/studentships will have realised output (not all are relevant to all projects/studentships), MRC has significant interest in the development of new products, in interactions with industry and policy makers, and in the licensing of intellectual property – where these occur. We utilise information in these sections regularly.
- Take care to report the funding that directly benefits your team, the total amount of funding available to networks/consortia (the total value of larger awards) can be reported as well. For example, for European Commission network awards report funding for your participation and the total EC contribution to the network separately. Provide grant reference numbers as provided by your funder, and report amount awarded (not the full economic costed value of the award).
- Keep in mind that the text you submit will be published, so take care about drafting or adding placeholders in some fields – “not applicable” or “not known” is fine, but comments such as “john to fill in” will appear odd to readers. You may wish to visit the UKRI Gateway to Research to see how your information will be displayed.
- If possible be brief – a few words are often better than pages of pasted text, Researchfish® data is often used as finding aid and we will contact researchers that have provided interesting feedback to ask for further detail. A URL can usually be added to sections to point the reader to more information, and this helps desk research on outcomes and impacts.
- Include the most important outputs. If you haven’t the time to report everything, then prioritise, what is the clearest evidence that your work has progressed/generated knowledge? What has had the greatest impact outside of your own work, or had the most influence on the work of others? How have you contributed to furthering the mission of your institution or funder?
