Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases
In 2011 the MRC launched its first call under the Global Alliance for Chronic Disease (GACD) seeking research project proposals to investigate hypertension prevention and control in LMICs, with an emphasis on implementation science. Similar calls were launched in several of the GACD Partner countries. Grants were awarded to 2 UK research projects under this call.
The MRC launched the second GACD call for proposals on 8th November 2013, and made up to £2m available for this scheme. This second call focused on research into the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, specifically implementation and intervention research in low-and middle-income countries.
The MRC launched the third GACD call for proposals on 29th May 2015, with £2m of MRC funding available. The focus of this call was prevention and management of chronic lung diseases in low- and middle-income countries. The MRC funded 2 research projects under this call.
Nine funding partners participated in the third call, over double the number that participated in the first call, and most crucially, five agencies from LMICs were also involved.
