The Fund for International Collaboration
The Fund for International Collaboration (FIC) aims to enhance the UK’s excellence in research and innovation through global engagement. The FIC focuses on bilateral and multilateral partnerships with global research and development (R&D) leaders. The FIC is administered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
The fund was first announced in the UK government’s Industrial Strategy White Paper in November 2017 with funding of £110 million. In January 2019 UKRI published a press release with information about the first FIC calls. The UK government also published a press release about the FIC.
The MRC are involved in a number of FIC calls and initiatives supporting international research collaborations. These calls will be run in collaboration with a range of research funding organisations from countries outside the UK. In some cases the calls will also be in collaboration with other councils within UK Research and Innovation. The scientific areas and countries covered by each initiative will be specified in the call documents.

- MRC-MSIT/NRF UK-Korea Research Call 2019: The MRC, Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) plan to launch a call to support a joint research project between the UK and Korea. Further details will be available over the coming months. Up to £2 million of UK funding has been allocated to support this call.
- Belmont Forum Call on Climate, Environment and Health: This multilateral call will be run through the Belmont Forum with involvement of the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and MRC. The call will provide new knowledge, evidence for action, and tools to enable health systems globally to prepare for and manage population health risks and benefits associated with climate change and variability. This programme will support community building of required networks of researchers and implementation partners, and identify the critical knowledge gaps in the pathways from climate to health where new research is needed.
