Our achievements: Obesity
1 Jan 2014
Obesity is one of the greatest threats to health in the developed world. Research has shown that obesity severely increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart and liver disease, some forms of cancer, and also increases the likelihood of developing other long-standing illnesses. A report published in 2013 revealed that 61 per cent of adults, and 30 per cent of children aged between 2 and 15 in England are now either overweight or obese.
The MRC has played a leading role in obesity research for more than three decades, from the initial investigation into metabolism and why obese people put on weight to research into genetics and strategic reviews to influence Government policy.
