Professor Patrick Chinnery appointed as MRC Clinical Director

Professor Patrick Chinnery has been appointed as MRC Clinical Director. He joins the senior management team and will play a key role in developing, promoting and implementing MRC research programmes, working with national and international partners.

Professor Chinnery’s clinical expertise is in neurology. He worked in Newcastle for many years, latterly as Director of the Institute of Genetic Medicine. In 2015 he moved to Cambridge where he leads a research programme on mitochondrial genomics and human diseases in the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit.

Professor Chinnery is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, an NIHR Senior Investigator and a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow. He is currently chair of the MRC Neurosciences and Mental Health Board.

He said: “’The MRC supports some of the world’s most exciting research into human biology and disease. As a practicing clinician, I want to see these advances translate rapidly to improved healthcare. This new role presents a fabulous opportunity to help deliver this.”
