Research areas of particular interest include the following, but proposals addressing other topics of importance for the region will also be considered:

  • Emerging infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance and zoonosis
  • Non-communicable diseases
  • Maternal and child health
  • Mental health
  • Humanities, social science and policy and systems research.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants may be from Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam or Thailand, or from the UK, but the focus of the research must be in the South-east Asia partner countries and strong partnerships with local researchers must be demonstrated.  Other eligibility requirements for these schemes apply as indicated on the scheme webpages.

Application process

Please indicate in your preliminary application if your proposal intends to fall within the Newton Fund initiative. Successful applications will be jointly funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council as delivery partner for the UK government Newton Fund.
