MRC funding for institutes
The MRC has spent £593m over the past five years to support its institutes (Figure 17). Alongside the MRC’s units and university units, these investments are designed to provide a stable critical mass of expertise to support key scientific opportunities and health needs.
Funding for both MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) and MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS) has remained relatively consistent over time. At the start of 2016 the majority of funding for National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) (Figure 17, blue) transitioned to the Francis Crick Institute (Figure 17, green), and the initial set up costs of the new institute are included above.
