MRC support for regenerative medicine

The MRC has supported 320 awards and invested £187m over the past five years into regenerative medicine (see Figure 14), with in-year support increasing over this period. In 2013 the MRC, in collaboration with BBSRC and EPSRC, established the UK Regenerative Medicine Platform (UKRMP). The UKRMP is a £25m initiative that is addressing the key translational challenges of regenerative medicine, and provides critical mass of academic expertise, innovation and knowledge, connected to commercial and clinical end-users.

In addition to the 320 awards in the MRC’s regenerative medicine portfolio, we also support a considerable number of awards related to the wider study of stem cells. While there is considerable overlap between the two award portfolios (see representational Venn diagram, right), 154 awards (with total commitment of £134m) related to fundamental stem cell biology are not incorporated in this assessment.
