Advance course masters

MRC no longer invests in Advanced Course Masters as a stand-alone mechanism, however, we have embedded support for ACM funding in our Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP). This will ensure continuation of support for training in skill priorities and to support interdisciplinary training in a flexible way. It will also ensure cohesion between training at different levels across a cohort of MRC students.

Past competitions

The last competition was run in 2012 for block awards of Advanced Course Masters (ACM) studentships in the priority areas of biomedical imaging, advanced in vivo sciences and mathematics, statistics and computation.  Allocations were made for students starting in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

We do not provide funding to students directly - prospective students should therefore contact the institution at which they wish to study. Organisations holding current research masters funding are published under studentship application success rates.

Review and current approach

A 2014 review concluded that Advanced Course Masters (ACMs) had:

  • supported delivery of interdisciplinary training, with approximately 30% of ACM students holding a prior a non-biological first degree (e.g. in maths & computing or physical sciences).
  • catalysed investment in Masters training by host institutions, with the majority of courses now well embedded in institutions.

It was noteworthy that one of the main motivations for ACM students was increased academic competitiveness, with approximately 50% continuing into PhD positions and a majority stating they would have considered completing the ACM as part of a PhD.

MRC have therefore embedded support for ACM in funding for Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP) from 2016 intake of students, rather than as a stand-alone mechanism.
